Change the World Tuesday

I am a new Twitterer…or whatever the rest of the world calls those who find themselves social networking via Twitter. One of the reasons I enjoy it is because I find little bits of inspiration, education and humor to get me through the day. It’s almost like having co-workers again, only with the advantage of being able to disengage without having to get up and close my office door.

Today, for the second time, I followed a link from Twitter to the blog of Scott Allen, who from what I can tell, is a guru of anything and everything related to social media and networking. I love the concept he offers in his blog, Change It, as it embodies a simple and “thoroughly modern” way to grow goodness. Please visit http://tinyurl.com/cs97om.

Did you read it? Because I am not your Cliff Notes or Sparks or whatever we use to do our reading for us these days, my friends. So if you didn’t click on that link, just know the rest of this post will make more sense after you do!

If I was in Phoenix instead of Montana, I’d post a photo right now that I have hanging above my washing machine. I took it when I was in the village of San Pedro La Sequia in Olancho, Honduras in 2005. I was there to help that village, but the lessons I learned changed my life forever. The photo is of a beautiful young woman washing her clothes in a trough. I have a brand new Kenmore washing machine with so many features I’ll never use them all, and I still complain about doing laundry. That photo serves to remind me of many things. It adjusts my perspective to a more grateful one; I become more mindful of resources and stewardship; I think of the responsibility of living in a developed country and what it means to practice liberation theology (read Mountains Beyond Mountains); and I also remember that I was one of the first North Americans the young woman in the photograph had met. Those villagers had never seen the likes of us. That’s a good thing to remember when I think the world is all about me.

Let’s all Change It. Awareness is the first step in growing goodness. Take the first step today and join Scott Allen’s son via all the social media at your disposal. And if you don’t “do” social media, put a photo on your cubicle wall, your dashboard…or maybe even in your laundry room. Just Change It!
