Happy Mothers Day

I wish each and all of you a Happy Mother’s Day. Some people at church this morning may have found it strange that I wished men, children and women a Happy Mother’s Day, but I feel like it is truly a day to celebrate for each of us.

All of us have within us the potential to “mother” one another. I had an amazing mother, and I miss her every day, but I think the world can learn a great deal from her and other good mothers. We could learn to see in each other the potential for all that we can become and the goodness for every little small thing we do well—even the smallest things; we would remind each other of our inherent goodness and beauty; we’d celebrate each other for no particular reason; we’d go out of our way to do things just the way another would like them done; we’d offer spaces of quiet and grace in which others could find an opportunity to renew their spirits; we’d laugh a great deal…but not at another’s expense; we’d speak gently but firmly and free our conversations from needless criticism that could damage the child within; we wouldn’t seek power over children, but we’d guide them and model the kind of behavior we’d hope them to demonstrate.
Anyone can do these things. Mother each other. Mother your own heart. And have a beautiful day full of Grace.
