Do you believe in luck? Perhaps you just love a good tradition? black eyed peas

If either applies to you, or if you grew up with the Mathers family on Merriam St. in Miles City, Montana, you know that sometime in the next 24 hours, you’d better be serving up some black eyed peas to insure your good fortune in 2010. My mother always encouraged me to eat at least 12 of the muddy-tasting legumes—one for each month—and I resisted each bite. But now, I actually look forward to them thanks to a wonderful recipe I’m about to share with you so you too, can truly enjoy this Southern tradition!

I stumbled across this recipe in Women of Great Taste, one of my favorite cookbooks by the Junior League of Wichita.

Good Luck Peas
Ingredients:
2 Cans (16 ounces each) black-eyed peas, with liquid
3-1/2 ounces pepperoni, diced
1 medium green bell pepper, diced
1 medium onion, diced
2 tablespoons picante sauce
1/4 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
Salt to taste

Combine all ingredients in a large saucepan. Cover and simmer for one hour over low heat, stirring occasionally.

For best results, cook while listening to this great tune by THE Black Eyed Peas. I got a feeling…that this year’s gonna be good, goodyear!!

Thanks to woodleywonderworks for the beautiful photo of black eyed peas!
