What to do when you’ve lost a job–more info

I love harvesting information of value and sharing it. That being said, I’m sharing a link to a great story from the UK on doors that open…or windows that open when doors close, if you glean inspiration from Broadway Musicals…when you’ve lost your job.

The thing is, we may be staring so hard at the conventional doors we want to open before us, that we miss the doors we’re meant to walk through to do more good. Whether or not you are without a job at the moment, people need you more than ever. They need you in schools, homeless shelters, senior centers, volunteer tax assistance locations…all just waiting for the skills, time and compassion that you are uniquely suited to share.

The story I loved today is Losing your job can open door to a new world. Obviously, the idea of reaching one another is a theme we’ve been exploring lately on the Bloomin’ Blog, and volunteering is an excellent way to make those efforts structured and intentional. Mary Charlotte and I volunteer several times a month and it never fails to lift me up, whether we’re at a homeless shelter or preparing meals for refugees.

The other valuable takeaway from this article for me was the importance of avoiding gaps in your resume. As the Kinexa expert in the article explained, not only does volunteering fulfill the altruistic nature in our spirits, but it also helps fill in the time shown between jobs on your resume as time when you actually had enough initiative to serve the world. Furthermore, volunteering will connect you to new people and a new part of the community that might just be the bearing your life’s compass needs to carry you to the next stage.

So, enjoy the article, and have a seeking goodness, doing good kind of day!
